The dissertation considers the role of diversified agriculture in the post-plantation rural landscape of Hawaii County, Hawaii, by examining the intersection between Hawaii's agrarian discourse with the realities of agricultural livelihoods and lifestyles in East Hawaii. This work highlights the opportunities and challenges of re-creating an agricultural industry in Hawaii through an exploration of land-based projects initiated in East Hawaii, and their intended and unintended outcomes.
