The Daniel K. Inouye Leaders in Action is a Registered Independent Organization (RIO) at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. We are dedicated to the legacy of leadership and service of the late Senator Daniel K. Inouye. Our mission is to organize various events and efforts that help students to be more civically engaged as well as give them the opportunity to learn more about critical issues of our state and nation.

This semester, we are hosting our Pupus and Politics on March 30, 2016.

Our event, titled “Ancestry, Color, and Faith is Not a Crime” will focus on the theme of Protecting Civil Liberties during times of National Crisis.

This event is an opportunity for students, Legislators, community leaders, and scholars to learn and engage in discussions about three broad topics:

Ancestry: Civil Liberties of Japanese Americans during the WWII;

Faith and Color: Civil liberties of Arab Americans and Muslims in 2016; and,

How to be vigilant in protecting our civil liberties and national security.

Our panelists are Dr. Ibrahim Aoude, Department of Ethnic Studies, former Representative Colleen Hanabusa, and Dr. Fujio Matsuda, former President of the University of Hawaii.
