Presenter: Mary Hagedorn, PhD, MarineGEO Hawai‘i, Director

In this century alone, Kāne‘ohe Bay has suffered extensive dredging, pollution, and near extinction of its coral reefs. To help understand and reduce the degradation of the bay, MarineGEO (Global Earth Observatory) Hawai‘i – a partnership between the University of Hawai’i and the Smithsonian Institute – serves to explore the intersections of science and indigenous knowledge, tapping into the traditional ecological knowledge developed over centuries in Hawai‘i and its application to management and conservation.
