Intervention and Selective Restoration for the Future of Hawai?i’s Coral Reefs
Kira Hughes, Program Manager, Hawai?i Institute of Marine Biology
The #1 threat to corals is thermal stress caused by CO2 emissions, which can result in coral bleaching and even death. This talk will dive deeper into solutions:
- how we create “Super Corals” in the lab and
- how we identify corals that are naturally more resistant to thermal stress and selectively propagate those corals within the same bay.
We are launching a new project that will incorporate community participation, and hope that you will join us in these efforts to save our local reefs.
