Women Workers and Class Struggle in Waikiki

October 16, 12:30pm - 2:00pm
Mānoa Campus, Saunders 541

Panel discussion featuring members of Local 5 union discussing the fight to unionize at Aston Waikiki, and the role of women organizers

Unite Here! Local 5 represents approximately 10,000 workers in Hawaii, including those in the tourism and health care industries. Since 1938, the members of this union have struggled for fair treatment and living wages in these industries. This struggle is as active today as it ever has been. Beyond that, Local 5 recognizes the need for broad-based community engagement for a successful labor movement. To do this, they have expanded their union, organizing the Aikea movement, an alliance between union workers and community members to promote a wider social justice agenda.

Join the Women’s Studies Department as we listen to the personal stories of these people. Speakers will include women leaders in the struggle for a fair unionization process as Aston Waikiki and contract for Kaiser Permanente workers in Hawaii, as well as UH students involved in the Aikea movement.
