Mapado: Island of Fortunes

The Center for Korean Studies fall film series presents a showing of Mapado: Island of Fortunes (마파도), a 2005 feature Directed by Choo Changmin.∙The fall series, "Late Blossoms: Old Age in Korean Cinema," is featuring films with a bright outlook on the elderly in South Korea. In Mapado, a gangster and a corrupt cop are trying to track down a woman who stole a winning lottery ticket from them. They follow her to a small, isolated island inhabited only by five elderly women. What follows is a nightmare week of slave labor and sexual harassment while the two wait for the next boat. These film screenings are free and open to all. Korean films are shown with English subtitles.
