“It’s the 808 loveâ€: Rap and Local Aesthetics

This presentation will feature Geo Quibuyen aka Prometheus Brown fka Geologic is a Cali-born, Hawai‘i-raised, Seattle-based rapper with a camera. This talk will focus on local visual narratives from his musical groups, Blue Scholars and The Bar.
He attended the University of Washington, where he met Sabzi to form the acclaimed Seattle Hip Hop duo Blue Scholars in 2002. In 2010, he started the Rappers W/ Cameras vanity project (parties, photozines, blog) with Thig Nat of The Physics. In 2011, he teamed with longtime collaborator Bambu to form the supergroup, The Bar. Geo has toured all over North America, being the first Filipino rapper to rap in front of many crowds whom he asked “how many of you are seeing a Filipino dude rap for the very first time?â€
Geo has contributed op-ed pieces for Al-Jazeera and The Seattle Times, for which he wrote an editorial rap on gun violence that was nominated for a 2012 Online Journalism Award. He was the Seattle Town Hall artist-in-residence in spring 2013, when he also returned to UW to complete his BAs in History and American Ethnic Studies. Later that same year, he and Chera Amlag began Food and Sh*t, a monthly pop-up culinary event initially held at Inay’s Asian Pacific Cuisine and currently housed at Kraken Congee. They recently opened the Hood Famous Bakeshop in Seattle, home of the famous ube cheesecake.
