Ban Nuclear Weapons

October 26, 5:30pm - 8:00pm
Mānoa Campus, Newman Center, 1941 East West Rd, Honolulu, HI 96822

This FREE event is part of the annual international observance of Disarmament Week, which is October 24-30.

Newman Hawaii, together with co-host Mānoa International Relations Association, presents a screening of the documentary film, Gate: A True Story (2008), narrated by Martin Sheen. After the film, there will be an opportunity to join the 122 United Nations member states and over 100 NGOs to support the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. The USA and other nuclear armed states have not signed this Treaty.

Film synopsis: After the bombing of Nagasaki and Hiroshima, the survivors began to pray; not for vengeance but that Nagasaki would be the last city to know the horrors of the atomic bomb. Japanese Zen monks guard the "Atomic Flame", still burning 60 years after the bombing and return it to the place of its inception, the Trinity Test Site in New Mexico. They hope to start a new cycle of disarming the 3,000+ existing nuclear warheads and reducing the threat to world peace and our fragile planet. We thank our partners in the peace movement, Honpa Hongwanji Hawaii, for providing the film.
