Abstract:
The Yangtze River is one of the largest rivers in the world. Yangtze River basin and its lowlands are the most important economic development region of China. However, this region suffers from frequent flooding throughout the history. The reasons for causing floods are many, including, snow-melt and fast run-off due to steep topography, soil erosion due to deforestation results in increased run-off, especially in the mountainous regions, monsoonal rainfalls, typhoon rainfalls for the near coast portion, sedimentation in riverbed with increasing demands of dyke heights, reduction of natural retention areas due to sedimentation / land reclamation, cutting of Maeanders, hydro technical constructions, and climatic change. As it turns out, the impact of climatic change on the Yangtze River runoff has to be taken into consideration. A trend has been shown that precipitation events are increasingly concentrated in summer months with an increasing number of heavy rain days.
