Out Loud in the Library! featuring Photographer Mel Stones

September 12, 5:30pm - 7:00pm
Windward Campus, Hale La‘akea (Library)

Stones will present and discuss images from her book That’s a Crazy One. As a teenage photographer, Stones had inside access to the NYC youth culture of the 1990s. Stones’ talk will explore questions about reality and illusion, the power of photography, and the artist’s responsibility to her subjects.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, Mel Stones photographed this collection of images while still in high school. Her circle of friends were skaters and punks; a few inspired and acted in Larry Clark’s film KIDS. The photo negatives sat in Stones’ archive for over 20 years until she and co-author Highlyann published the book as a photographic memoir of their teens.
