Rev. Masatoshi Shamoto, director

The Hawai'i Gagaku Kenkyukai (also known as the Hawai'i Gagaku Society) was founded in 1968 by Rev. Masatoshi Shamoto and his first generation of students in Hawai'i. The group is a community-based ensemble that meets weekly to study and practice the ancient music of Gagaku. The group has performed numerous times in Hawai'i for ceremonies at shrines, temples, and the Japanese consulate, and in Japan.

This concert is to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Hawaii Gagaku Kenkyukai. Joining them in the celebration is Japan Gagaku Society member Mihoko Eriguchi, bugaku dancer, who will be performing with the musicians of the Hawaii Gagaku Kenkyukai.
