Recognizing Data Biases

January 28, 2:00pm - 4:00pm
Online via Zoom

Workshop Description

Recognizing that many algorithmic biases stem from biased data, this workshop will help participants recognize potential biases in their own data. Case studies ranging from egregious errors to effective mitigation steps will be presented and discussed. Participants will begin to write and critique their own algorithm impact statements as a first step to reducing their own potential algorithmic biases.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

Clarify their biases as a researcher/developer

Evaluate data for biases

Know methods and resources for mitigating data biases

Recognize the potential for algorithmic harm

Tools used for this workshop

Word processor/pen & paper
