CIS 701 Communication and Information Theories of Society

This course is a foundation for the CIS doctoral program, intended to prepare Ph.D. students to critically evaluate and apply theoretical principles in their own research. Due to the interdisciplinary core of the CIS program, we will focus primarily on theories addressing information and communication technologies and their social roles and contexts. We will also probe the interdisciplinary nature of the information and communication sciences and question the constitution and boundaries of the field. To accomplish the above, we will critique existing criteria for theory evaluation and collaboratively develop a new instrument for assessment.
