Notice: Windows 10 End of Support Advisory (Apr 28 12:57 pm)

Windows 10 End of Support

Microsoft will end support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025 and will no longer provide software updates, technical assistance, and security updates for Windows 10 after that date. Refer to Microsoft's Windows Lifecycle FAQ for more details.

As a result, ITS will be ending support for Windows 10 on September 30, 2025. ITS recommends that UH users with Windows 10 devices upgrade to Windows 11 before this date.  Running an unsupported, unpatched operating system (OS) presents a security risk to all users and devices on the UH network.

How do I upgrade to Windows 11?

If your Windows 10 device is capable of running Windows 11 (see Windows 11 System Requirements):

  • Upgrade to Windows 11 for free

    • Compatible devices currently running Windows 10 version 2004 or later can upgrade to Windows 11 for free.

    • For instructions on how to upgrade to Windows 11 for free, visit https://www.hawaii.edu/askus/1912

If your device is not capable of running Windows 11:

  • Plan to replace your device with one that supports Windows 11 before September 30, 2025. Contact your department/college IT specialist or ITS for assistance.

Application Compatibility

  • All ITS-supported applications and web applications work on Windows 11.

  • For ITS-supported applications and web applications on Windows 11, see https://www.hawaii.edu/askus/575#pc

  • Ensure that any other essential applications you are currently using are supported or a compatible version is available for Windows 11.

Peripheral Device Compatibility

Most peripheral devices, such as printers, scanners, external hard drives, optical drives, etc. that work on Windows 10 are compatible with Windows 11, however, some older peripheral devices may not be compatible. Check the device vendor's website for compatibility information for Windows 11. If Windows 11-specific drivers for peripheral devices are not available from Microsoft or the vendor, existing Windows 10 drivers may be compatible for use with Windows 11 as a fallback, but your mileage may vary. Ultimately, if your peripheral devices do not officially support Windows 11 and available Windows 10 drivers do not result in functional devices when running Windows 11, you may need to purchase new peripheral devices. Be cautious of unofficial, third-party websites that promise compatible drivers - always obtain drivers from either Microsoft or the manufacturer/vendor’s website and never install hardware or peripheral drivers from unknown sources.
