June 6, 9:00pm - 10:00pm
Mānoa Campus, John A. Burns Hall, Room 3121 (Third Floor), 1601 East-West Road Add to Calendar

Please join us for a Public Seminar with Dr. Denise Natali, Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of Conflict and Stabilization Operations, U.S. Department of State, who will discuss the State Department’s lead role in implementing the Stabilization Assistance Review (SAR) to stabilize conflict-ridden areas. She will also share some remarks on the U.S. Indo-Pacific Strategy.

The SAR outlines an interagency effort to stabilize areas of conflict and lays out a framework for making diplomatic, development, and defense engagements more efficient and accountable to taxpayers by aligning stabilization efforts with defined political outcomes. The SAR formally defines agency roles for stabilization missions, with State as the overall lead agency, USAID as lead for non-security stabilization assistance, and DoD as a supporting element.

Dr. Denise Natali previously served as Director of the Center for Strategic Research, Institute for National Strategic Studies, National Defense University, where she provided strategic analysis and support to senior leaders at the Joint Staff, Secretary of Defense, Combatant Commands, and other U.S. government stakeholders on issues related to the Middle East, Iraq, transborder Kurdish issues, ISIS, and post-conflict stabilization. Dr. Natali has more than 30 years of experience in post-conflict relief, reconstruction, and stabilization including in Pakistan and Iraq. She has written numerous analyses on Iraq, Syria, Turkey, Kurds, and ISIL. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania and a Master of International Affairs from Columbia University. She is a member of the Council of Foreign Relations and speaks French and conversational Kurdish and Farsi.
