Documenting Activism: The Early Days of the Native Hawaiian Movement
November 6, 11:00am - 12:30pmWest Oahu Campus, James and Abigail Campbell Library
In conjunction with Ê»UluÊ»ulu’s 2017 HawaiÊ»i International Film Festival archival film screening of “Documenting Activism: The Early Days of the Native Hawaiian Movementâ€, we’re hosting a second showing at the University of HawaiÊ»i-West Oahu on November 6 from 11:00am-12:30pm.
This event is open to all! ʻUluʻulu preserves the moving image history of Hawaiʻi to honor the past and ensure its availability for future generations. The film “Documenting Activism: The Early Days of the Native Hawaiian Movement†brings to light those who courageously documented the beginnings of the Native Hawaiian movement, while recognizing how these images are being used today.
We will screen a segment of the documentary “Moʻolelo o ka ʻĀina†(1984), produced by KITV followed by newly preserved raw archival footage from the Protect Kahoʻolawe ʻOhana collection. Included is archival footage of the first landing on Kahoʻolawe, January 4th 1976.
After the archival film screening there will be a panel with the filmmakers who captured the early movement and a discussion of how the footage has impacted the next generation of documentarians and activists.
