University of Hawaiʻi Maui College student Kalamani Fili has been selected as the campus’ student employee of the year.

Fili, who is studying construction technology, began working in operations and maintenance as a general laborer in 2022.

“Fili is an extremely valued member of our staff and landscaping crew. Walking around campus you will see the results of his handiwork in the improvement of our grounds and the many beautification projects in progress. He is one of the most hardworking and positive people I have met here at UHMC,” wrote Sharlene Tom Smith, security department auxiliary and facilities services officer, “Fili is dependable, highly motivated, works well with our entire staff and is always willing to help. He embodies the spirit of ʻohana and aloha everyone should strive for.”

The Student Employee of the Year award was created to recognize exceptional student employees for their contributions and achievements. They are nominated by their supervisors.

The winner receives a scholarship for use toward tuition ($1,000 this year), their name engraved on a perpetual plaque to be displayed in their department, and a certificate of distinguished service.
