“Hawaiʻi‘s favorite hoʻokūkū, the Merrie Monarch, or Mele Manaka is fast approaching. The Merrie Monarch Festival is a hoʻokūkū hula (hula competition). There are many other kinds of hoʻokūkū such as a hoʻokūkū hīmeni, or singing competition. Laki maikaʻi (Good luck) to all of the mea hula and hālau competing in the hoʻokūkū.”
