Regulated Waste Disposal at UH Manoa – Guidance and References

This guidance is limited to regulated waste generated by University Operations at the UH Manoa Campus. For general refuse or unregulated waste questions, recycling, bulk item disposal, etc., contact your Building Coordinator, the UH Manoa Work Coordination Center at (808) 956-7134, and/or refer to the UH Manoa Buildings & Grounds website at www.manoa.hawaii.edu/bgm/.

Batteries

Regular alkaline batteries, i.e. household-type batteries, may be discarded along with the regular trash.

For other batteries such as lead-acid, nickel-cadmium, lithium containing, mercury containing, etc., refer to the UH Manoa EHSO Hazardous Materials Management Program Manual.

Biological Waste

Refer to the UH Biological Safety Program.

Chemical Waste

Includes:
• Surplus chemical products (i.e. unused surplus chemical that could be used by another University department)
• Chemical waste
• Chemical contaminated sharps (including glass, pipet tips, Pasteur pipettes, blades, scalpels, needles, etc.)
• Chemically preserved tissues/specimens

Compressed Gas Cylinders

Equipment

Equipment from Science, Engineering, Art, Research Laboratories and Shops may contain hazardous/regulated components and must be decommissioned and/or specially disposed of. Contact the UH Manoa EHSO at (808) 956-8660 for assistance.

Fluorescent Light Bulbs (Tubes) & Ballasts

UH Manoa Campus Operations and Facilities removes and disposes of fluorescent light bulbs/tubes and ballasts from facility/building lighting fixtures.

For fluorescent bulbs/ballast from UH Manoa Student Housing, University Housing, and Campus Center operations, contact your respective maintenance staff.

For disposal of fluorescent light bulbs removed from laboratory or shop equipment, contact the UH Manoa EHSO Environmental Compliance Program at (808) 956-9173.

For specialty bulbs/lamps such as UV lamps, halogen lamps, atomic absorption spectral lamps, etc., refer to the UH Manoa EHSO Hazardous Materials Management Program Manual.

Oil and Transformer Fluid
