The Meaning of Mahu: An Evening with Kumu Hinaleimoana Wong-Kalu

November 19, 7:00pm - 9:00pm
Mānoa Campus, On Zoom

The UH Manoa LGBTQ Center and UH Manoa Residence Life are honored to present “The Meaning of Mahu: An Evening with Kumu Hinaleimoana Wong-Kalu.” We will discuss the historical and contemporary context of mahu in Hawaii and how it is distinct from the LGBTQ movement.

Kumu Hinaleimoana Wong-Kalu will reflect on her journey as a leader in Hawaii who came to a deeper understanding of herself as both Kanaka Maoli and mahu while a student at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. She is currently a prominent figure in the Hawaiian Burial Council, Mana Mahu, and a protector of Mauna Kea.

Further we will discuss the role that she plays as a healer in Hawaii by discussing the state of affairs of the criminal justice system and her position as a kumu of Hawaiian culture in OCCC.
