Build a Go Bag

Living in Hawaiʻi means being prepared for a unique set of natural hazards and logistical challenges, making a “go bag” (or emergency preparedness kit) an essential item for everyone. Here’s why: many of our weather threats often require immediate evacuations, and a go bag ensures you have vital supplies to take with you without delay. These events can lead to power outages, disruptions in transportation and supply chains, and limited access to resources for days or even weeks. A Go Bag with sufficient supplies for at least 14 days (as recommended by Hawaiʻi emergency management agencies) is crucial.

What a “Go Bag” Provides:

  • A well-stocked go bag typically contains essential items to sustain you and your family for at least 72 hours. Key items usually include:
  • Water: At least one gallon per person per day.
  • Non-perishable food: Easy-to-prepare and high-calorie options.
  • First-aid kit and medications: Including any prescription medications you or your family members need.
  • Important documents: Copies of IDs, insurance policies, and other vital records (consider a waterproof container or a thumb drive).
  • Flashlight and extra batteries.
  • Battery-powered or hand-crank radio: For receiving emergency information.
  • Whistle: To signal for help.
  • Personal hygiene items: Toilet paper, hand sanitizer, feminine hygiene products.
  • Warm clothing/rain gear.
  • Cash: ATMs and credit card systems may be down.
  • Supplies for children and pets (if applicable).
