Amber Gilbert

For the second time this season, University of Hawaiʻi at Manoa soccer player Amber Gilbert was named Big West Freshman of the Week after a pair of strong offensive performances at UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly.

Gilbert scored her third goal of the season in Sunday’s 2-2 draw at Cal Poly, striking in the seventh minute off of a long ball from Eliza Ammendolia to give UH a 2-0 lead. In Thursday’s match at UC Santa Barbara, Gilbert attempted a pair of shots with one on goal, giving UH two of its best scoring chances in the 0-0 tie.

The redshirt freshman currently leads all Big West freshmen in both points and goals scored, with eight points and three goals. Gilbert is second on the team in both categories, and seventh overall in the conference in points and tied for seventh in goals scored. She has also been efficient with her shot attempts, scoring on three of her nine total shots while putting seven of the nine on frame, with a shot on goal in six of the eight matches.

Gilbert is the only Big West player to win the weekly freshman award multiple times this season, while making it three straight weeks that a Hawaiʻi player has earned a weekly honor from the conference.
