U H Hilo volleyball player
Tani Hoke

An outstanding pitching performance and solid defensive work on the volleyball court led to awards for two University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo athletes.

Freshman libero Tani Hoke had another solid weekend as the Vulcan volleyball team scored four more wins at the PacWest #3 tournament against Hawaiʻi Pacific University (HPU) and Chaminade University of Honolulu, April 17–18. Hoke had a total of 69 digs in four matches, zipped in four aces and passed well. On the season, Hoke has 16 aces and a team-best 236 digs. Her 4.93 digs per set ranks fourth in the PacWest Conference.

Christian Sadler was nearly perfect last weekend against HPU. On Saturday, making his first start on the mound this season, Sadler had a no-hitter through seven innings of a scoreless game. He walked a batter in the third and in the fifth, but otherwise it was three up and three down for the Sharks. Finally, in extra innings, he gave up a home run in the top of the eighth but his teammates scored twice in the bottom half to get UH Hilo and Sadler the 2-1 win. He finished with a one-hitter with two walks and five strikeouts.
