Teaching and Materials Development with a Global Englishes Focus

Global Englishes (GE) has been suggested as an umbrella term to include the concepts and research areas of World Englishes, English as an International Language, and English as a Lingua Franca (e.g., Rose & Galloway, 2019). Proponents of GE advocate for language teaching that emphasizes the development of proficient users of English in global situations; that focuses learning on uses of English that fit a variety of local contexts (acknowledging that “local” can include using English internationally); that exposes learners to oral and written materials covering a wide variety of GE uses and users; that provides awareness of and training in the use of interactional strategies; that incorporates learners’ use of English to explore and appreciate a wide variety of other cultures (not just Inner Circle cultures); that taps into each learner’s repertoire of translingual and transcultural knowledge; and that provides assessment and feedback based on learners’ success in using all the tools in their repertoire to adapt to their interlocutors and communicate effectively.

In this course, we will review the key concepts underlying GE, discuss how those concepts translate into GE-focused curriculum, pedagogy, assessment, and materials development, and look at some of the barriers to GE innovation. Students will develop materials and lessons with a GE focus, for a specific context and student population of their choice.
